Greetings from Not a Museum by me, Yna. Subscribe if you want to hear about angst against institutions, obsessions in online spaces, and attempts at parsing through the history of visual art.
Four years working for a museum and several years of keeping a death grip on both the internet and art for a semblance of sanity has led me here. Wherever this is. Those 18 hours of screen time a day coupled with my tendency to wolf down zoom-ins of paintings might as well go into something that resembles a reflection.
I’ve always wanted to be a person who could say, “Oh you like that TikTok? I think you’ll like this Duchamp,” and vice versa. Listen, it sounds pretentious, but I’m all for providing gateways between supposedly unrelated media. This is what I aim to do with this space. So hold on to internet pickings and 19th century canvasses with me and let’s dive into this together. In the meantime, please enjoy this picture containing a Miro and Patrick. They have, as the internet says, the same energy.
This Substack contains things that I know and these are stories I want to tell. Because what am I if not my fixations? (A question I pose but never actually want to address). Come sit with me?
Looking forward to telling you about my brush with casual imperialism and World Fairs in the next article. In the meantime, tell your friends!
